Causes of Low Water Pressure in Your Home

faucet-dripping

Having low water pressure in your home may not seem like a huge deal. You still have access to water, and the pressure isn’t that low—just enough to be noticeable. But your water pressure should not change, and it especially shouldn’t weaken consistently over time.

Low water pressure is a sign that you need to schedule plumbing service in Slidell, LA. It’s better to stay ahead of a potential problem rather than waiting until there is an even greater impact to your home’s water supply. For example, waiting may lead to even lower water pressure, leaks or other issues. You can keep reading to learn more about why you might have low water pressure and how our team can fix the issues.

Demand

If you’re using water at multiple sources in your home at the same time, this can lower the water pressure all over. Sure, you have a nearly endless supply of water entering your home. However, there is a limit to how much water can come in at any given time.

If you are running the dishwasher, washing a load of clothes and have a couple of people showering at the same time, you may experience lower water pressure during these activities. Keep in mind that water pressure should return to normal as the demand slows down.

Shut Valves

Your home’s water system has shut off valves that help to control water flow to different sources in your home. It’s possible for these shut valves to malfunction and not allow water flow when they should. As a result, you may have lower water pressure. The good news is that our team can fix or replace the shut valves so that they operate in the way that they were intended—to control water flow but not restrict it.

Plumbing Fixtures

If your home has hard water, there’s a chance that mineral buildup can gather behind the small mash coverings inside of the faucets. It may seem like you have low water pressure, but really this mineral buildup is blocking water flow.

If you take off the small mesh cover and rinse it out, you may find that your water pressure improves. You can do this at each faucet around your house. Of course, if this doesn’t turn out to be the issue then you probably still need to give us a call for service.

Plumbing Clogs

If there is a clog somewhere in the water lines leading up to your house, it can cause low water pressure. Most people are more familiar with clogs leading away from your home that cause slow draining and backups. But it is equally possible to have a clog in your other waterlines too. Common causes for low water pressure coming into your home include pipe damage and tree roots growing through pipes in your yard.

Pipe Corrosion

And if you don’t have blockages, then you may have pipes that have corroded to the point that they have holes and are leaking water. If water is leaking out through holes in your plumbing before it ever has a chance to reach your home, you may have lower water pressure. This should usually come with other signs too. You may have wet patches in your yard that don’t really have a cause. When this happens, you’ll probably see much higher water bills, too.
