Type of Cooling System

The first thing to decide is what type of system you want to begin with. You can get a standard central air conditioner, a heat pump, or a ductless mini split. A central air conditioner offers cooling alone while a heat pump or ductless mini split model also offers heating.

The benefit to one of these two systems is eliminating the need for a separate heater. If you’re looking to save space inside of your home, eliminating the need to store a second central HVAC system inside of your home could be a reason to consolidate. They all require similar maintenance steps.

HVAC Sizing

Next it is important to get a properly sized HVAC system so that it can condition your home effectively. If your air conditioner is too large, the additional power will be a detriment. Instead of working well to cool your home, your air conditioner will shut down before completing a cooling cycle all the way through.

You may find that your HVAC system turns on and off frequently when it is too big for the space you are trying to cool. On the other hand, a unit that is too small will struggle to keep up. It may turn on and stay on for extended periods of time in an attempt to lower the indoor air temperature of your home. Having a properly sized unit goes a long way toward helping with energy efficient operation.

Efficiency Ratings

And speaking of energy efficiency, you also need to take efficiency ratings into consideration. All air conditioners and heat pumps receive a SEER2 rating to gauge cooling ability. A higher rating means that your air conditioner or heat pump will keep your home cool while using less energy to do so. Your energy costs will be lower, plus you enjoy the added benefit of reducing wear and tear on your unit since it won’t have to work as hard to produce results. You can save money on your monthly energy costs and get more out of that initial installation investment by having a system that lasts for longer than the average lifespan.
